Sign Maintenance and Improvements

Are you interested in helping maintain the sign?


Looking ahead.
There are thoughts around making the sign less vulnerable to livestock wandering through.  Also, it would be nice to accomplish a maintenance-free (or maintenance-reduced) site.
Some have suggested fencing.
Past maintenance projects:
Work was begun in the summer of 2016.  Grass/weeds were cut to uncover the message.  Ground clear was sprayed to hopefully keep weeds at bay.  The county has agreed to spray occasionally which is a tremendous help for continued visibility.

Junior Steinbring, owner of Jetmore Lumber, donated a gallon of water seal which was applied to the wooden cross above the original sign.

Three truck loads of brick from Jetmore's historic Main Street were hauled to Hard Rock Sand & Gravel in Dodge City where owner Kolt Huber crushed them to gravel size.  Approximately 24 tons of finished product was then trucked back to Jetmore.

On October 12, 2016,  Friends And Mentors Engage (FAME) formed a bucket brigade to place the crushed bricks around the white letters to make the sign stand out more.  42 teenagers along with a half dozen adult mentors participated in the event and spread an estimated 19 tons of the dark red material.

Summer, 2019:  Daryl Abbott of Jetmore designed and installed a solar powered lighting system to illuminate the cross above the sign.  Some 800 LED lights now adorn the cross at night!

Fall, 2019:  Karen Ochs transferred $3,500 from the remainder of Marion Ochs' memorial fund to the Hodgeman Community Foundation for the purpose of further maintenance and improvement needs for the sign.
